As a Christian attending AVĪŽĀė, I appreciate how the Crest symbolizes my purpose and focus. I believe whole-heartedly in our motto: āThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdomā and in the recognition the symbols give to God. Concordia acts as a means toward more meaningful life by providing students with the opportunities and abilities to succeed in their fields of study. Although Concordia is no longer a faith-based institution, its official Crest is nevertheless very important to me. Through its symbols, our Crest reminds me of the purpose behind my educational pursuit– to excel in my chosen field and glorify God.
The symbols each recognize an important aspect of Concordia. The cross seen in the centre of the Crest represents the universitiesā founding doctrine, or set of beliefs. Concordia was established with the intent of educating students in a Christian context, represented by the Bible pictured as the foundation of the Crest. An alpha and omega are found on the pages of the Bible and symbolize Christ as the beginning and end of Concordiaās life. Behind these symbols is a maple leaf, honouring the Canadian context of the university. Together, these symbols depict Concordiaās original context and focus.
When I think of Concordiaās Crest, I am reminded of some of the original purposes and motives behind the university, which help to focus me in my educational pursuit.
